How the WBDA was formed.
1981 was dedicated as a year for disabled people and to mark this, a group was formed locally called the Newbury District Liaison Group on disability.
This group worked on behalf of disabled people locally until, for a variety of reasons, it was disbanded in 2000 - its name by then having changed to the Disability Alliance of West Berkshire (DAWB).
The remaining funds of DAWB were transferred to the West Berkshire Council for Voluntary Services (WBCVS), who used them to run a series of "Diability Forums".
From these Forums came the realisation that a group such as DAWB was still needed and out of this realisation the West Berkshire Disability Alliance (WBDA) was born.
The WBDA was formally launched in April 2003 when its constitution was ratified by a full open Disability Forum. However the WBDA had in fact been in operation throughout the entire year of 2003.
